Science - Oceans

We started a new science book this semester, Exploring Creation With Zoology 2. The first chapter is on Oceans, and we are really enjoying it. I was amazed at how many experiments and resources there are out there on this topic, and I can't wait to try some out and share them with you!

In addition to the text, I got several pages of coloring sheets and other printables from Enchanted Learning, and am using a couple of other books. So far this week we have covered pages 1-11 of Exploring Creation With Zoology. To go along with this text we used the following pages from EnchantedLearning.com:

For pages 1 - 4:
Great White Shark (An example of a Nekton)
Manta Ray (An example of a Nekton)
Shark Glossary---N is for Nekton
Plankton

                                   For pages 5 -7:
                                   Rivers

                                  For pages 8 - 11:
                                  Tides

We also read pages 4 - 9 of the book Life in the Oceans by Lucy Baker
and pages 4 - 9 of Make it Work! Oceans by Andrew Haslam and Barbara Taylor

We did the experiment on page 9 of the Make it Work! book. This experiment was fun because it also helped us learn how a lava lamp works, and would work for a volcano study as well.

The final thing that we did this week for science was an experiment from a website about currents. You can find the experiment here: Teacher Vision - Currents and Waves Experiment
The kids, Alex, in particular, really liked this experiment because when they were done they just kept playing with the straws and the gram cubes in the water. It was like having bathtub playtime at the kitchen table!

So, there you have it. Our 1st week of science. What did you do this week? Got any great websites, experiments, or books to share? Leave me a comment, or a link to your blog, I would love to see what you have going on!
